Becoming a National Model in Urban Arts Education...
ArtsAPS is a 3 year, system-wide initiative for transforming student achievement through the arts. Experts increasingly agree that the skills necessary to thrive in the 21st Century are the creative skills uniquely developed by the arts. Using an arts-centered, data-driven approach, ArtsAPS will make APS a national model for urban arts education. Funded by a major grant from the U.S. Department of Education, ArtsAPS will:
1.) Use a new, cognitively-based model of creativity to teach the unique 21st Century skills developed by the arts;
2.) Implement arts testing in grades 5, 8, and 10;
3.) Improve arts instruction through new, best practice teacher assessments;
4.) Engage all Music, Visual Art, Dance, and Drama teachers in two intense, year-long professional development courses;
5.) Use data to drive reflective teaching, student achievement, and provide a district-wide overview of the arts in each school.
