IGNITE: Arts-Centered Education for the 21st Century
Welcome to IGNITE/ART, devoted to visual arts initiatives impacting Atlanta's schools. It is designed as a forum for providing both news and resources for transforming student achievement in and through the visual arts.
Our featured programs are The Invitational Art Education Fair; A Masterpiece of Learning and On Site/Insight, two unique ongoing projects initially funded by The McCarthey-Dressman Educational Foundation; and Think With Your Senses/Feel With Your Mind, a project funded by VSA Arts and the MetLife Foundation. Have you ever thought about making art out of...dirt? Or math? Or science? How about cement?
The second annual Invitational Art Education Fair, a K-12 Celebration of the Visual Arts in the Atlanta Public Schools, was held on April 18th, 2008. We unveiled cutting-edge art by Atlanta’s youth, new arts initiatives, over 1,500 original works of art by APS students, and explored how the creative process leads to academic excellence. Our theme was “See What You Think!” We challenged visitors to think about art in new ways and to see how the creative mind thinks and works.

The Invitational Art Education Fair is a professional learning project of M. A Masterpiece of Learning is a new teacher development initiative that is energizing the Atlanta Public School’s Visual Arts Program, starting with an intense 4-day workshop for 15 art teachers at the High Museum of Art. As a result, teachers developed 75 new lesson plans and brought over 1,100 students from 15 schools to the High for individualized, interdisciplinary learning experiences. Projects from this program can be found throughout the Invitational Art Education Fair.
Most students experience art through books, and typical museum visits bring brief, passing encounters with masterworks guided by impersonal audio-tours. This project is different by using a new model of creativity that brings students into direct, academically-rich, personal dialogues with art. A unique program, this initiative was conceived and implemented by APS art teacher Raymond Veon, with funding provided by the McCarthey-Dressman Educational Foundation and extensive support from Art Access and the High Museum of Art.

Cooperate...Conceive...Create! These are the vibrant ideas brought to life in a one-of-a-kind arts initiative bringing students together from across the city. On Site/Insight teams visual arts students from nationally recognized Grady High School with students from the newly formed Carver School of the Arts and M. Agnes Jones Elementary School. Funded by a $7,000 Academic Enrichment Grant from The McCarthey-Dressman Foundation, with extensive support from the High Museum and Art Access, On Site/Insight teaches high school students from diverse backgrounds to bridge social, racial, and personal differences by working towards a common goal: improving academic achievement through mentoring 5th grade students in the arts. In Phase I, 81 students from Grady and Carver studied at the High Museum, analyzing masterworks from interdisciplinary, technical, formal, and philosophical perspectives. Then these students devised individualized learning experiences for elementary students, showing them how these themes become concentrated and distilled through different aesthetic languages. In Phase II, students use their new insight to design five community-based, site-specific artworks that are being unveiled at this year’s Invitational Art Education Fair.

ArtsAPS is a 3 year, system-wide initiative for transforming student achievement through the arts. Experts increasingly agree that the skills necessary to thrive in the 21st Century are the creative skills uniquely developed by the arts. Using an arts-centered, data-driven approach, ArtsAPS will make APS a national model for urban arts education. Funded by a major grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The McCarthey Dressman Educational Foundation is dedicated to serving students and teachers in developing interests, strategies, and skills needed to enhance society. It was founded by Sarah McCarthey and Mark Dressman, professors at the University of Illinois Champaign, in recognition of the struggle educators too often face in bringing truly exceptional teaching to their students. Ever-tightening budgets and skyrocketing costs now make it more difficult than ever for educators to introduce new programs and projects to children who need them most. To that end, the McCarthey Dressman Educational Foundation awards grants and scholarships to those projects and/or initiatives with significant potential to augment the educational experiences for youth of all backgrounds. The McCarthey-Dressman Foundation awarded two grants to Mr. Raymond Veon, one for student academic enrichment and the other for teacher development, for each of the following school years: 2007-2008, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010. www.mccartheydressman.org

UPDATE: Renewed for the 2010-2011 school year! This project is an extension of our On Site/Insight program that emphasizes integrated creative experiences with students having diverse abilities and disabilities.
Creativity (n): an over-arching process that orchestrates how we learn, think, and respond to generate new insights, original products, and to transform the ways we structure the world. Specifically, it is an executive cognitive process that coordinates metacognitive strategies, higher-order thinking skills and affective responses through extended durations of open-ended imagination, speculative inquiry, and the rigorous forging of an idiosyncratic worldview.
We often take creativity for granted, forgetting that it is a demanding, long-term process requiring concentrated periods of instructional time. Yet the unique educational value of the arts is found in the creative process, through which students go beyond being cultural consumers to producers of cutural and intellectual milestones.
The Interface Method is an intellectually-based model of the creative process that is coordinated with and extends Bloom's Taxonomy. For more information, please follow this link.

Third and second grade students from M. Agnes Jones Elementary School recently had artwork on display at the State Russia Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The theme of the exhibit is "My Favorite Museum," and our students chose to share their enthusiasm for the High Museum of Art with their Russian friends. We are proud of our students for representing the United States in this exhibit! Six of our students were included in the printed exhibition catalog, and all students received certificates signed by the Director of the State Russia Museum. M. A. Jones is special because...
the staff and partners at Jones are committed to providing a rigorous and challenging curriculum for all students. We are learner-focused and offer Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health, Physical Education, Music, Art and Spanish. Each classroom has four or more computers that are supported by a state-of-the-art computer lab. We extend the school day by offering an after school program and tutoring services. We are preparing students to function as productive citizens by meeting Georgia and national standards.
UPDATE June 17th, 2008: The staff of M. Agnes Jones Elementary welcomes our new principal, Ms. Margul Woolfolk. Ms. Woolfolk has been an exemplary Model Teacher for the Atlanta Public Schools, and now takes the reigns at MAJ! She will continue the long tradition of excellence set by Mrs. Eunice Robinson, who recently retired after more than 30 years of outstanding leadership and educational inspiration.
